GodPass
A Beacon of Light
Resilience, they say, is born from a powerful purpose, and this purpose is often stoked by the fire of love. When we're cast into life's darkest corners, resilience is our only hope, a flickering beacon that can seem lightyears away. This beacon for me, was born out of love for my children and the purpose it ignited in me - to guide them spiritually, to connect them with a community of faith, and above all, to equip them with resilience to face life's challenges.
My awakening came when my son was accepted into gp3 Academy, my alma mater. The proud moment was tinged with the realization that I had been depriving my children of a faith, a community, a tradition that could offer them so much. Particularly for my son, being biracial and coming from a public school, his journey at gp3 Academy could be daunting. I didn't want him to feel alienated, especially during mass when non-Catholics are differentiated.
It was imperative to give him, and his younger sister, a chance to explore spirituality while still under my roof and to equip them with a community they could lean on even after I'm gone. So, after confirming their interest, we began our journey towards Catholicism, initiated by a sit-down conversation with Father Steve from my childhood church.
Despite my apprehensions and non-traditional life choices (oh, there's a few), Father Steve welcomed us warmly, reassuring me that my past did not warrant any excommunication (phew!).
Our path led us to the Alpha program, where enlightening videos and enriching discussions with like-minded individuals became our weekly ritual. Breaking bread with others while engaging in soulful conversations with my children created an unforgettable bond between us.
As we progressed through the program, the significance of faith, community, and the indispensable role I played as a parent in guiding my children onto this path crystalized. Our journey culminated in their baptism at the Easter vigil, an emotionally charged ceremony that moved us profoundly.
However, paralleling this journey of discovery was the creation of GodPass, a digital compass that emerged from the crucible of my personal adversity. It was conceived out of my yearning for a spiritual connection that would not confine us within the walls of a single faith. I envisioned it as a beacon that could cross-pollinate freely with the wisdom and diverse beauty of the world's spiritual traditions, honor individuality, foster spiritual growth and provide an answer to the echo in our hearts seeking connection, understanding, and love.
I've seen in my children, like many young people today, a natural curiosity and an unwillingness to limit themselves to one idea or belief. They, like many of their generation, are spiritually explorative, open to diverse faith experiences, and are looking for ways to engage spiritually that meet them where they are. This understanding became a critical component in the development of GodPass.
Throughout the challenging journey of developing GodPass, my children were my test users, their feedback shaping its evolution. Through it, we discovered spaces for prayer and meditation outside our immediate environment, finding solace and spiritual transformation in places we would never have discovered otherwise.
The future of GodPass may be uncertain, and the fear of not reaching people or failing to provide financial security for my family can cast long shadows over my hopes. But recalling the solace it has brought me, the hope it instills, and the spiritual growth it has facilitated, I am filled with renewed purpose and faith.
GodPass is more than just an app; it's a testament to resilience powered by purpose and love. If you're seeking a tool to explore, express, and enhance your spirituality, a companion in your journey towards spiritual growth, then GodPass is here for you. It has been my beacon in the dark, and I hope it can help illuminate your path just as it has mine. Thank you.
